Irish Dental Community Unites for Charity Sea Dip in Support of MND
The Irish dental community will come together this month for a Charity Sea Dip in support of MND Ireland, raising funds and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease.
The initiative is being organised by Irish Dental Jobs, Ireland’s only dental recruitment agency, as a show of solidarity for a retired UK orthodontist and long-standing colleague who is living with MND.
Dr Joff Machell, a retired specialist orthodontist from the UK, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in October 2025. Since his diagnosis, Dr Machell has responded with positivity — organising cold-water dips to raise both awareness and funds for the MND community. Rather than stepping back from professional life quietly, he has chosen to give back.
Taking place at The Sea Sauna, Portrane, the event invites dentists, dental hygienists, nurses, practice managers, and industry partners to step outside the surgery and into the sea — united by community and compassion.
Motor Neurone Disease is a progressive neurological condition affecting movement, speech and breathing. While there is currently no cure, organisations such as MND Ireland provide essential patient support, equipment funding and family services across the country.
Although the colleague at the centre of this initiative is UK-based, funds raised will go directly to MND Ireland, supporting patients and families here in Ireland.
“Dentistry is a close-knit community. When one of our own is affected by something as devastating as MND, we feel it. This swim is about standing together and doing something positive.”
